GLEN CHECK PATTERN
We were given a piece of fabric that could be used to make for example a skirt.
The assignment given was then to find out different things about this particular fabric - for example;
- Composition
- Fiber content
- Square meter weight
- Information of yarn
- Etc.
Below we have described the result of the above, and how we came to the result.
This fabric is a woven fabric made with 1/1 plain weave, as the left picture below shows.
The yarn is a filament fiber that is textured in both the warp and weft - the above picture in the middle. The picture to the right also shows that the yarn is jet textured, which means that the yarn is lying in blowing points.
It is a synthetic yarn made of polyester.
The video below shows how we identified the fiber content of the fabric by using a burn test;
The requirements for polyester in a burn test is;
- Melts when burned to a hard ball (which indicate that it is a synthetic fiber), dark smoke, no specific smell
Pros & Cons for polyester
Pros
- Good strength
- Doesn't curl
- Easy to clean
- Keeps it shape
- Doesn't shrink
- High elasticity
- Termoplastic
Cons
- Bad absorption ability
- No insulation ability
- Have tendency to be static
As polyester is a relatively strong material, we did a tear properties of fabric as came to following result;
- Warp: 60,03N
- Weft: 52,55N
This is also consistent with that the number of warp per cm (26 threads) is 19% higher than the number of weft per cm (21 threads).
It is important to keep an eye on the number of weft, as it is here most purchaser/ companies will be cheated by the supplier, as it takes longer to put in weft than warp.
Below is a small specification that shows the composition, fiber content, and the square meter weight of the fabric.
It is among other by the square meter weight that the purchaser/company can discover if they have been cheated by the supplier, if the number of weft isn't as required, because this will influence the required square meter weight.
Of course the specification are missing some test regarding color properties and functional properties. These tests we weren't able to do because of the time limit we got.
